Flux Table: A Fusion of Traditional Islamic Art and Modern Computation

Studio INTEGRATE's Award-Winning Design Marries Cultural Legacy with Contemporary Techniques

Studio INTEGRATE, led by Mehran Gharleghi and Amin Sadeghy, has created the Flux Table, a unique piece of furniture that blends the intricate geometries of traditional Islamic art with modern computational design and digital fabrication techniques. This innovative approach has resulted in a design that is not only visually stunning but also a testament to the evolution of culture and technology.

The Flux Table's design was inspired by the mathematical rules that underpin the formation of Islamic art and architecture. Its intricate geometry and pattern are derived from a basic "Toranj", a mathematical pattern used in Iranian architecture. This pattern forms the basis for a smooth transition between two layers of strict geometric pattern, creating a visually striking and complex design.

What sets the Flux Table apart from other designs is its fusion of traditional and modern elements. The table's form is generated using digital fabrication technologies, specifically CNC milling technology on high-density foam. The end product is a PU coated dense foam table that is lightweight yet sturdy, with dimensions of 180 x 100 x 80 cm.

The design process for the Flux Table began in September 2012 and concluded in June 2013, taking place entirely in London. Throughout this period, the team faced numerous challenges, including the need to evolve a culturally significant typology using existing and historical morphology coupled with contemporary techniques. They also had to reduce production costs and create a smooth transition between two strictly geometrical layers to maintain historical relevance.

The Flux Table's unique design and innovative approach have not gone unnoticed. In 2014, it was awarded the Golden A' Furniture Design Award, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. These are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.

In conclusion, the Flux Table is a testament to the power of design to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation. By fusing the intricate geometries of Islamic art with modern computational design and digital fabrication techniques, Studio INTEGRATE has created a piece of furniture that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also a reflection of the evolution of culture and technology.
